On October 7th 2006, Vladimir Putin’s 54th birthday, the journalist Anna Politkovskaya is shot dead at the entrance of her Moscow home. Anna’s death is a personal tragedy: she has just learnt that she was to become a grandmother. But the murder is also a political act, since Politkovskaya was the fiercest critic of Russia’s President Vladimir Putin. Why was she killed in cold blood, this elegant woman who was always on the side of the weak, defending those who had no rights? Was it because of her relentless fight against the brutal war in Chechnya – a war that was virtually ignored in the world at large and yet became a turning point in Anna’s life? LETTER TO ANNA is the story of a personal quest of a woman who would not accept the lawlessness and brutality of her fatherland. It is also a political film, which shows how democracy and freedom of speech are losing ground in Putin’s Russia.

Annas Tod ist ein persönliches Drama, soeben hat sie erfahren, dass sie Grossmutter wird. Der Mord ist aber auch ein politischer Akt, denn Politkowskaja war die schärfste Kritikerin des russischen Präsidenten. Warum wurde diese elegante Frau, die stets auf der Seite der Schwachen und Rechtlosen stand, kaltblütig erschossen? Lag es an ihrem Engagement gegen den Krieg in Tschetschenien? Einem Krieg, den die Welt kaum zur Kenntnis genommen hat, der jedoch zum Wendepunkt in Politkowskaja’ s Leben wurde.  LETTER TO ANNA ist eine persönliche Spurensuche, die auf zahlreichen bisher unveröffentlichten Aufnahmen aufbaut. LETTER TO ANNA ist aber auch ein politischer Film, der zeigt, wie die russische Regierung das Rad der Geschichte zurückdreht. Der Film wirft ein dramatisches Licht auf den Zustand der Presse- und Meinungsfreiheit in Putins Russland.
