Mayak Film was founded in Moscow in 1995, while Laurent Stoop was living in Russia and was working with a number of television stations.

In 2005, Mayak Film moved to Zurich, while maintaining its activity in Russia.

In 2014, Mayak Film changed direction when Laurent and Svetlana met. They opted to make their own theatrical documentary films, while continuing their collaboration with television.

This collaboration is characterized by its unique Russian-Swiss perspective and expertise on the post-Soviet space that finds its artistic expression through the medium of direct, immersive cinema.
