A Swiss “gen-tech” invention is intended to save millions of children. Ingo Potrykus may soon reach this goal, since his genetically modified Provitamin A rice should be marketed in the Philippines in the near future. But is this something the people in the Philippines really want? Ingo Potrykus, Professor Emeritus of the Zurich Polytechnicum ETH, has developed the so-called “Golden Rice” for children who have lost their sight, are undernourished and who suffer from a lack of Vitamin A. Is this rice, produced thanks to genetic technology, supposed to help the poorest of the poor or to increase the profits of the global agro-industry?

Kinder, die erblinden, weil sie unterernährt sind und an Vitamin A Mangel leiden – für sie hat der heute emeritierte ETH-Professor Ingo Potrykus den goldenen Reis entwickelt. Dieser Reis ist gentechnologisch hergestellt und enthält Provitamin A. Ist es ein Gentech-Produkt im Dienste der armen Bevölkerung oder zum Profit der Agroindustrie?
