Her parents called Zaynap Gashaeva “Coca” – the dove. Born in exile in Kazakhstan, she became a businesswoman and mother of four children upon her return to Chechnya. When the first Chechen war broke out in 1994, Zaynap started documenting what became daily events: abduction, torture, killings. The so-called “anti-terrorist operation” launched in 2000 by Russia’s new President Vladimir Putin turned into an all-out war, killing, kidnapping and maiming up to one third of the Chechen population. For various reasons, the world was looking away. Together with other Chechen women, Zaynap assembled and hid in her home hundreds of videotapes documenting these horrors. Step by step, she brought the tapes secretly to Western Europe to serve as evidence, should there be a tribunal on the Chechen wars one day. This film is about the courage of a woman fighting for justice on behalf of her people.

Coca – Die Taube aus Tschetschenien – Europa und sein verleugneter Krieg

„Coca“ nannten ihre Eltern Sainap Gaschaiewa – die Taube. Geboren in der Verbannung in Kasachstan, wurde sie Geschäftsfrau nach ihrer Rückkehr in die Heimat und zog vier Kinder gross. Seit 1994 dokumentiert sie, was in Tschetschenien täglich geschieht: Verschleppung, Folter, Mord. Präsident Putins “antiterroristische Aktion” hat Züge eines Völkermordes angenommen. Bis zu dreissig Prozent der tschetschenischen Bevölkerung könnten getötet, gefoltert, verschleppt worden sein. Die Weltöffentlichkeit schweigt, sei es aus Unwissen, Hilflosigkeit oder Opportunismus. Zusammen mit anderen Frauen hat Sainap Gaschaiewa hunderte Video-Kassetten versteckt. Sie will diese nach Westeuropa schaffen. Sie hofft, dass es zu einem Tribunal kommt und die Schuldigen bestraft werden – auf welcher Seite sie auch stehen. Ein Kampf gegen Windmühlen?
