SYNOPSIS:

Monthati Masebe, a South African composer and activist, is invited to Vienna to found the Zweite Moderne Academy with nine other women in order to transform the conservative and patriarchal world of classical music. Their avant-garde works from Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe challenge the codes of a world dominated by white European men.But discussions about identity, gender, and culture give rise to tensions, revealing the difficulties of dialogue between tradition and modernity. In search of answers, Monthati returns to Limpopo to compose an opera inspired by a non-binary African ruler, blending classical music and traditional instruments. This journey becomes an exploration of memory and creative freedom, posing an essential question: who defines culture, and to whom does it belong?
