Tokyo – Zurich: New Forms of Housing

About This Project

Tokyo has a population of 36 million, Zurich only 400 000. But both cities strive to find new forms and ways of densifying the habitat. Riken Yamamoto, the architect who built the “Circle” at Zurich airport, has developed a settlement in Tokyo with the idea to encourage the interactions and contacts between the people living there. Ryue Nishizawa as well as the architects of Bow Wow demonstrate in the Japanese capital how small surfaces can be put to maximum use. But as far as new forms of housing are concerned, the Japanese architects find some inspiration in Zurich, a city which is known worldwide for its achievements in this area. Andreas Hofer, one of the pioneering architects from Zurich, is literally overrun with demands from potential clients.

Tokio-Zürich: neue Wohnformen

Tokio mit 36 Millionen Einwohnern und Zürich mit nur 400’000 haben eines gemeinsam: In beiden Städten wird nach neuen Formen des verdichteten Bauens gesucht. Riken Yamamoto, Architekt des ‘Circle’ beim Zürcher Flughafen hat in Tokio eine Siedlung gebaut, die den Kontakt zwischen den Bewohnern fördern soll. Ryue Nishizawa oder das Architektenteam Bow Wow demonstrieren in Tokio, wie kleine Flächen maximal genutzt werden können. Wenn es um neue Wohnformen geht, orientieren sich die japanischen Architekten auch an Zürich, das sich in den letzten Jahren damit international einen Namen machte. Der Zürcher Architekt Andreas Hofer, massgeblich beteiligt bei Pionierbauten in Zürich, kann sich vor Anfragen kaum retten.
